- Whether it is tracks like "Heaven Bound," which was recorded by Kelly Willis on her acclaimed release What I Deserve, or "Waiting for the Mail," which Charlie Robison covered on his Life of the Party, or whether it is the simple, familiar comfort of his songs, Damon Bramblett writes songs you have heard before. This 11-song release is much more than a working songwriters record of his own work. He brings an honesty and frankness to the songs that only an author can really present. There is no interpretation here but rather a telling of stories and feelings. His voice is not especially dramatic; in fact, his singing style could almost be classified as dull, but like fellow Texans Jimmie Dale Gilmore and James McMurtry, he presents his work in the raw, original form. The value is not in the packaging, but rather in the content and presentation. But it is a little unfair to minimize the positive aural aspects of this eponymous release. Guest musicians such as Amy Boone and Conrad Choucroun from Damnation TX on drums and backing vocals, respectively; Lloyd Maines on steel guitar; and other noteworthy performers from in and around the Austin, TX, music scene help make the songs complete. Maines, a mainstay in the Austin scene, also serves as producer. In the end, Brambletts songs stand out, which is the best compliment that can be paid to any songwriter. ~ Michael Cusanelli
