This is a large earthenware jug probably made at the Fremington Pottery near Barnstaple in North Devon in the mid-19th century. Fremington was founded a 1820 by the potter George Frimley and produced earthenware pots and utensils from north Devons distinctive red clay well into the 20th century,

I have based the attribution on an identical jug described as a Fremington Long Tom found through Google. It holds just over two gallons and is not marked. It stands 15 inches tall and measures 11 inches at its widest point. As a country piece sold for use rather than display it is a rare survivor. The inside is a treacle colour glaze. There are no cracks, repairs or restoration.

If you know what this is you will know my asking price is reasonable and less than half that being asked for comparable country pieces. I would prefer the buyer to collect because of the risk of breakage but I am happy to cooperate with any courier the buyer nominates.
